Description Salvia apiana, commonly known as white sage, is a highly aromatic perennial shrub native to the southwestern United States, particularly California and parts of Baja California. It belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae) and is easily recognised by its silvery-white leaves and strong, earthy fragrance. White sage is a slow growing evergreen perennial that grows in dry, sunny environments. It usually reaches up to 1–1.5 metres in height but in ideal conditions can reach up to 3m. Its leaves are coated in fine hairs, giving them a pale, almost frosted appearance. In late spring to summer, the plant produces tall flower spikes with delicate white to pale lavender blooms that attract bees and other pollinators. Is drought tolerant, but does not tolerate humidity well. For centuries, Salvia apiana has held deep cultural and spiritual significance, particularly among Indigenous peoples of North America. It has traditionally been used in smudging ceremonies, where dried leaves are burned to produce a purifying smoke believed to cleanse spaces, objects, and individuals of negative energy. Approx. 1000 seeds per gram. Common Name. White sage; California white sage; sacred white sage; grandfather sage; bee sage; buffalo sage. Germination.
